Hi, we are Mary and Jenny. Since we were children our family has rescued cats and kittens abandoned, hurt, sick and strayed. They were part of our family growing up. When our parents passed away, we continued to take in cats, nurse them to health and make them members of our family. We became known in our community as the place to take cats in need of care, receiving cats from neighbors and even our own vet. We take every cat to this wonderful vet who provides care for them. We give necessary treatments to every cat that needs medical care. We have spent multiple nights feeding ill cats every hour through a feeding syringe. The cats all have their vaccinations, flea treatments and are spay/neutered as soon as possible. We also have a registered feral community that we care for. All of our income goes to caring for these cats. They are our family. They are 63 in number, healthy, happy, loved, and they are our family.
Last year, the Humane Society of Harrisburg took our cats and charged us with neglect for having an unsanitary environment.At the initial court hearing, they showed photos of a house that the cats did not live in. Yes, that house was not a good environment for cats, but they did not live in that house. They lived in our mother’s house where we lived. That court dismissed all but 4 citations against us, did not restrict our ability to have as many cats as we wanted going forward, but ordered our cats who were in the care of the Humane Society be forfeited to them. We appealed that order and have a hearing on the remaining 4 citations in June.
When they took our cats, they were chasing them around our home and scaring them to where some of them went through a window and ran off. We gave them the name of each cat as it was crated. We told them which ones had medical issues and offered the medicines, IV fluid bags and prescription diet foods we had been giving them. We also gave them the name and number of our vet. They refused to take the medicines we offered. The Humane officer immediately renamed every cat and kitten, failed to give the vet at Humane the medical information we provided and failed to give the vet at Humane the contact information for our vet. In addition, when he was taking our family, one of the feral kittens ran into the house, scared by the commotion. He was trapped in a cage to be brought back out to his mother and colony. The Humane Officer, knowing it was part of the feral community, insisted on taking the weeks old kitten because “he had been in the house” albeit for 5 minutes.
While Humane has had our cats, they have called us for permission to perform medical treatments. They give us the name THEY gave the cat so we can’t identify which cat they are talking about. When we ask for photos so we can identify them, they send us black and white copies of part of a cat’s head sticking out of a box and expect us to be able to identify the cat. Five cats have died while in Humane’s care.
We have been fighting to get our family back since they were taken. The courts are slow and in the time they have had our family the costs of care have added up. They also gave every cat flea treatment, vaccines and unnecessary vitamins and charged us for them. They did lab work to diagnose illnesses that we already had diagnosed and given treatments for. All because the Officer failed to communicate the name of the vet and the medical information. Now that we are coming up on the court hearing to fight the charges, Humane filed a petition for $195,000 in costs of care. We are continuing to fight for our family, but if we don’t make $5,000 a month payments to Humane, the law says we will forfeit our family to Humane. Our incomes combined, aren’t enough to cover that amount. Unfortunately the law does not care if we do not have the ability to make that kind of payment.
We have cared for our cat family all our lives on the income we make. They are healthy and provided for and loved. Now we could lose them because Humane insists we pay them almost $200 thousand dollars.
We want to fight Humane and expose the cruelty of their policies and management of the animals, but first we need to get our family back.
